Dogs come not only in different breeds (there are hundreds if not
thousands of breeds of dog), but different types as well. And no, not
"big and little" or "short hair or long haired", although those
occasionally play a part in how the animal will be classified. The type
of dog is determined on what the dog will be used for. The two main
types of dog are working dogs and non-working dogs, but these are split
into several categories, each with their own subcategories.
A companion dog is one that is bred to be a household pet because of its friendliness, intelligence, and attractiveness. They are generally not good as worker dogs do to either inherent health issues or lack of size.
Some popular companion dogs include many Toy breeds and Miniature breeds. Some of these breeds include Pugs, Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas, and Poodles. These smaller animals are often considered "lapdogs" because of their ability to curl up easily into someone's lap.
A watchdog watches for unwanted visitors both human and otherwise, and "sound the alarm" of coming danger by barking. A guard dog will go one step further by actually do something to prevent the danger like getting in the way or attacking the unwanted person or thing. Guard dogs are used frequently by law enforcement teams for sniffing out illegal substances and tracking (and disabling) perpetrators. A few dog breeds often used as guard dogs include German Shepherds, Great Danes, and Bulldogs.
Hunting dogs assist their human owners in hunting animals. There are many different types of hunting dog including gundogs and birddogs (which are used for hunting fowl and aid in finding and/or retrieving the dead animal after it's been shot), waterdogs (used to go in the watery marsh after birds or animals that might be hiding), and hounds (used to find the animal to hunt with the use of there well developed senses). Some hunting dogs include Dachshunds, Bloodhounds, Greyhounds, Golden Retrievers, and Fox Terriers.
Pastoral dogs, including various breeds of Collies and Sheepdogs, are used for herding animals such as sheep and cows.
Chinooks, Huskies, and Eurohounds are breeds that fall into the sled dog type. Their job is to pull sleds with a pack of their peers either as a mode of transportation or sport.
