Cats make the prefect pet, but only when they are house trained.
The first thing you need to do is buy a cat litter tray so they can do
their business in it and not on your floor or clothes inside cupboards.
Some cats may ignore it completely while others will naturally use it.
If yours uses it straight away then great, all you need to do then is to keep it clean. But is your cat ignores it then you may have to try a few little tricks to get it accustomed to it.
If
you cat refuses to use the litter tray you invested in then don't
worry, you just have to educate the cat. Cats naturally have a very
small and weak bladder so they will need to go quite frequently. If they
go to the front or back door then try placing the litter tray there.
You can even lift them up and place them in it. If they get frightened
and jump out then you may have to show them what to do. Just get on your
knees and scrabble about in the little tray just to give a little
guidance on it's correct usage. Don't worry, you are not scrabbling in
cat business because it has not used it yet remember.
This may take a little patience but the cats natural instincts will take over after a while and they should start using it. A cat just wants to be clean and that is why the littler is so effective. It can do the business and then scrape over the gravel to hide and stop it from smelling. You really need to clean the litter tray out daily or every other day at the very least. A cat will not use the tray if it's dirty so you need to encourage it with a clean tray.
If you want to move the litter tray outside you can do. Many cats do not like to do their business outside because there are few places where similar gravel areas are found. Sand is one of their favorites though soil is far from ideal because it is dirty. Placing the tray outside the door should work as the cat will then go to the door so you know it wants to go out for some reason or other. You could also have an area of the garden where a small sandpit could be built. You will have to keep replenishing the pit with fresh sand but this should be a very welcome area for your cat.
Once you have encouraged your cat to go outdoors to so their duty then all you have to do is give instant access for them so accidents cannot happen if the door is closed. Fitting a cat flap to your back door will allow complete freedom for you cat so they can now come and go as they please without you having to perform sentry duty.
If your cat starts to scratch the furniture then you could get their nails clipped and to also invest in a cat scratching pole. This is normally strong twine wrapped around a wooden pole. You could even make your own and save money.
Cats make wonderful company and are fun to play with. As long as they are house trained then you have no worries. They will have the independence to come and go as they please without leaving a mess or pungent smells around. Educating your cat will ensure you get the very best of both Worlds, a clean house and a new best friend.
