Getting your cat to drink enough water can be difficult. Cats
need at least one ounce of water a day for every pound of body weight.
That means a 9-pound cat needs 9 ounces of water a day (about two quarts
per week) to stay healthy. Cats can go without food for a few days but
water is very important for them. Loosing 15% of water would actually
kill a cat.
First
thing to do to improve your cat's intake of water is to find out what
sort of bowl they like to drink out of. Do they like bowls or plates, do
they like ceramic, plastic or stainless steel. Always put lots of bowls
of water around your house so that wherever your cat is there is always
clean water available. Try and make the water more enjoyable by
changing it everyday and when it's warm twice a day. If the weather is
hot add an ice cube to the water as even we humans prefer cold water in
the heat.
You can also try a water fountain. These are very good as they recycle the water and keep it aerated. You can buy different sorts and sizes. If you have a multi-cat household then maybe a dog fountain would be better. Since getting one for my cats they love to drink out of it as it is a lot like having running water available. It also filters the water so that it is always clean and a lot nicer.
